I recently discovered this indie rock band from Los Angeles and I seriously loved them ! Since they haven’t actually released any music before 2016, I’m not THAT late to the party but their first EP was apparently recorded in a rush in three days with the help of youtube tutorials in 2015. The formation is composed of vocalist and guitarist Nick Anderson, bassist Aaron Kelley, guitarist Nick Schmidt, Westen Weiss on the guitar and keys and Billy Nally on the drums. They were quickly propelled after the release of their first single « Favourite liar » from their first EP « We Are The Wrecks » and have been touring non-stop ever since, opening for leading names of the alternative rock scene and selling out their own headlining tour.
As usual when I get obsessed with a band, it’s the originality and the singularity of their sound that really drew me in. I sincerely believe that is what makes the difference to break through in rock n’ roll nowadays : managing to create a sound with a real personality, that you can recognize from the first seconds and that identifies you to the public ear, people have to be like : « oh that’s definitely [band name] ! ». That’s the case anyway for the bands that really stick with me long term and that I go see in concert.
It’s always difficult for me to qualify a style, but it’s the heavy side of their rock that attracted me from the first listen. Being in an era that is governed by mainstream pop and rap music, we don’t really find a lot of bands that are not afraid to deliver a classic, pure, loud and powerful rock instead of safely conforming to the electronic pop-rock style (which I also love). I even personally get some 60’s-80’s rock Chuck Berry vibes from them ! With The Wrecks, you get screaming loud guitar riffs and solos, resonant drums, retro-sounding melodies carried by a few keyboard sequences and the powerful lungs of the frontman that transport you in the 90’s. I am really looking forward to getting an opportunity to see them live because judging from the videos I’ve seen, it must be insane !
Anyway, I strongly recommend this band which is no doubt going to make some noise (literally) in the future ! Here is a selection of my favorite tracks :
